I think I want to quit my job and go to school to be a mortician.
Thoughts?

I suppose that's about as recession-proof a job as it gets, except for maybe M.E.

Its a very competitive and hard to break in with if your family isn't already in the business. It is a very segregated business too. For both race and religion. The mortuary business has gone to conglomerates and much of the high profit margins have disappeared.
My wife works with a lady whose daughter went to school and bought her own mortuary. It has not been an easy start.

Probably the best chance you have at scoring with some chicks

I have thought the same thing. Assuming you already have a degree, you could pick up what they require in a year or so. Starting pay isnt bad, but you are the new guy so you get the worst hours, also end up doing a lot of the removals. I did a lot of work with a funeral director in Florida, and learned a lot working with him. The biggest thing for me was to seperate the emotional side from the business. You have to treat the body with dignity, but you also have to remember that it is just another body. Good luck with it.
