Do UM-Flint and UM-Dearborn count as "Michigan"?
If UM-Flint or UM-Dearborn started up a Div 1 football or basketball program, would we hate them just as much as the Wolverines? Is it guilt by association?
To me, both campuses are just another historical sore spot and another reason to hate the University of Michigan, but I don't know if it'd be the same.
What say you, RCMB?

For their alums, they'll tell you it counts as "Michigan"
To me, it's High School with ash trays and not even close.

I've met plenty of people who "Went to Michigan" who, upon further questioning, dropped out of UM-Dearborn after 1 semester

I've posted before that I know people who graduated from UM-Flint who leave off the Flint part on resumes or in interviews. They'll tell anyone who asks that they went to UM. I don't care that they went to UM-Flint, I have several friends who did, but putting it that way on resumes just seems wrong to me.

Do UM-Flint and Dearborn have the same admissions requirements and academic standards as scUM Ann Arbor? - NO, so why should it be considered Michigan. It really bothers me UM-Flint or Dearborn grads go around telling people that they graduated from Michigan. Most of them also conveniently leave the Flint or Dearborn part off of their resumes which is just wrong.

Thats like saying you went to UNC when you went to UNC-Wilmington or UNC-Greensboro or UNC Charlotte....I just don't get it...

I did ask a umaa grad about this once, and he made it clear that umd & umf grads are definitely NOT um grads, in his not-so-humble opinion.
I have to agree with him.

Might as well call EMU "University of Michigan - East."
Heck, EMU is just as selective in admissions as Dearborn or Flint.

It should, because MSU-Dubai has similar admissions standards to MSU (the difference being the international aspects). One would think that UM grads would be upset that their degree was being lowered in value because UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint people were getting (supposedly) the same degree.

Several years ago the alums from umaa raised enough of a stink that um-Flint and um-Dearborn both had to stop issuing diplomas without showing the um branch.
For at least 20 years UM Flint grad had diplomasshowing UM only and never correcting anyone who assumed it was umaa.

i have a masters from um-dearborn (undergrad from msu - still bleed green). i never considered it the same as ann arbor, but i do know that my program was under the umbrella of the rackham program in ann arbor. i honestly don't know if it's the same academic standard, but when i signed up, everything seemed to suggest that is was, but maybe that's just the spin machine at work.
however, i do put um-dearborn on my resume, and be sure to specify dearborn when people ask where i went. i actually feel better about myself saying dearborn!

This. Admissions requirements are different. Tuition is much different. Schools are not the same.

I know that even though they share branding and identity and the governing body, and most UMF and UMDb grads don't differentiate from UMAA (their alumni association is cross-institutional, even), they aren't equivalent academically and institutionally.
But would the MSU/UM rivalry apply to UM-Flint or UM-Dearborn (assuming they had functional D1/FCS teams) because most UMF or UMD lump themselves in with UMAA?

MSU-Dubai is not considered a different school with different admissions criteria. You can interchangeably take courses in Dubai or East Lansing. When I schedule classes every semester, I can choose to take classes in Dubai if I want to without needing any special permission.
UM-Flint and UM-Dearborn have their own, almost non-existent admissions criteria, separate from the pretty selective school that is scUM-AA. If you go to UM-Flint, you can't just schedule courses in Ann Arbor like it's no big deal. You actually have to apply as a transfer if you want to go to UMAA.

UM-Flint is definitely almost non-existent in terms of admissions criteria, but to say that about UM-Dearborn is laughable. If I had graduated from scUM and had people out there touting UM degrees from either dearborn or flint as the same as mine, then I'd have an issue with those people. However, I do know that the admissions standards at UM-Dearborn are on par with Michigan State, and those accepted are similar in terms of test scores for MSU students. So please don't sound like a fool and say that UM-Dearborn has almost non-existent admissions criteria.
Undergraduates:
UM-Dearborn -
Acceptance Rate = 71%
Applicants ACT Scores -> Bottom 25th Percentile: Composite 21, Verbal 20, Math 20
Top 75th Percentile: Composite 26, Verbal 26, Math 26
Michigan State University -
Acceptance Rate = 76%
Applicants ACT Scores -> Bottom 25th Percentile: Composite 22, Verbal 21, Math 21
Top 75th Percentile: Composite 27, Verbal 27, Math 27
UM-Ann Arbor -
Acceptance Rate = 57%
Applicants ACT Scores -> Bottom 25th Percentile: Composite 26, Verbal 26, Math 26
Top 75th Percentile: Composite 31, Verbal 31, Math 32
UM-Flint -
Acceptance Rate = 85%
Applicants ACT Scores -> Bottom 25th Percentile: Composite 19, Verbal 17, Math 14
Top 75th Percentile: Composite 24, Verbal 24, Math 24

I don't think the rest of the world cares.
I knew an Indian dude who drove to flint from metro D for a masters cause his family and friends back in Bangawhore (bangalore) would be really really impressed with a uofm degree.

i believe that the University of Michigan in either are the only two that have the same logo and colors as the main campus. University of North Carolin in Greensboro, Charlotte, etc. don't do it, University of Alabama in Birmingham doesn't....UT Martin, UI-Carbondale, UW-Whitewater....none of these places do it.....why then does flint and dearborn do it. Personally, being associated with UNC is more impressive than UofM, but the UNC satelites don't get the same opportunity.

But that's the thing, The University of Wisconsin in Whitewater is D-III, they are purple and white. UM-Flint is not a different campus of the same school. They have their own admission standards and practices, they have their own staff and faculty. That's what I don't get....they are not one in the same. CMU having classes in Troy is one thing, MSU having classes in Troy is one thing....but it's not just a different campus of the same school.
