I work with a guy that's a big hunter.. I gave him as good of a description as I could and he figures it was probably a grey fox... however, he said that there are plenty of coyotes around here.. even in mid-Michigan.

We live on the outskirts of Denver, and have many greenbelts between the subdivisions. The greenbelts bring all kinds of animals from the foothills and plains nearby. I've seen coyotes regularly here. None of them would EVER seem like a serious threat to humans - they're the size of skinny, mid-size dogs. (Dog owners, however, are warned to keep their dogs on leashes as coyotes do pick dogs and cats off regularly.) I don't know - throw a bunch of coyotes together or make them of the 75-pound variety mentioned above and I would have much more concern. Still, I am much more worried about running into a mountain lion or bear (or even a rattlesnake) here than the coyotes. And, all that being said, I'm really glad those animals are still even in the ecosystem to begin with.

Yet another demonstration of the foolishness of heading off alone into the wild. Wilderness is beautiful, but it does not care that you think so.
Buddy up.

Coyotes are incredibly fierce animals. I know a guy who tried to free a coyote who was stuck in a barbed wire fence on MSU's farms and the critter shredded his arms. Guy weighs 200 pounds. MSU Police had to come out and shoot the animal and convince my friend to go to the ER.

I think that rule one is never run from a predator and carry a stick. Runners or joggers raise the interest of big cats especially. Or take a Russian Wolfhound on your walk-run. They are one of the few dogs that can catch a coyote on the run and will then rip them to shreds.

A few years ago I was in Banff National Park (Canadian Rockies) when a woman from Canmore was out hiking and was attacked by a bear and killed. The prevailing local opinion was that, while this incident was tragic, they'd chosen to live in a wilderness area, and this is the price that occasionally they must pay.
One person pointed out that if there's a fatal accident on a highway, you don't talk about closing the highway. This sort of event is extremely rare. The main thing is to secure your trash so the bears don't become habituated to humans.
I stayed in the town, being a coward.

Coyotes are everywhere.... I live in Northville, where there have been numerous sightings, and I've personally heard a pack howling at night.

Damn right. Well, six of them anyway. The other two would have had their skulls smashed in by it. Not saying I wouldn't take some injuries, but I'd live.
In reality, one shot in their general direction and they'd all run off...
