Off-topic Advice on Getting Rid of Woodpeckers?

My parents have a woodpecker attacking their house. Any advice for getting it to go away?

No, we are not willing to kill it.

That's what I was thinking...There's a reason why the Woodpeckers are knocking on the house in the first place....

We have had "issues" in the past here in Northern Michigan.

1) Defense - snip a can top over any active penetration

2) Physical warfare- Choice of motion lights or motion activated water spray from hose

3)Chemical warfare ......leave active spot open but use a icy hot on the site, or hot peppers ground up and mixed with vasaline.

The theory is mix it up to get them to move to less complicated areas. Good luck!! 1 &3 worked for us.

I have heard the vinegar plan also works well.

RP...woodpeckers are idiots! I had one knocking on a metal shed!

OK, in addition to be unwilling to kill it, we are also unwilling to maim it.

Pretty sure there are no termites - my parents had some work done on the house at the end of the summer and nothing like that showed up when inspected.

This would work in a lot of situations with unwelcome advances

If they're walk-ons, charge them $70 to stay.

My son chased away a woodpecker that was rapping on the house with a low-powered airsoft rifle. He hit it just below the neck and didn't kill it. It took off and never came back.

My favorite method of vermin/nuisance control was pioneered by my cousin, who lives in Northern Michigan. Squirrels and other assorted pests would eat plants out of his garden and be a general pain in the arse.

He, too, didn't want to kill them, so instead he'd sit out back with beer and a paintball gun and fire away. For a while, every once in a while you'd see a blue squirrel in the woods.

We threw a soccer ball at the ones going at my brothers house. Not sure if they came back later - but left for the day.

There is a spray called RoPell which works for about 1-3 months. Has a rather unpleasant smell, but it is not really that bad. And for me, it worked fine.

Also, you can hang aluminum plates from the valances and on the sides of your house to reflect light which sometimes does work. I could not try that in my own neighborhood because of our strict covenents.

One final, last ditch, remedy is to hang suet from a tree a way away from your house. The suet will attract the woodpecker, instead of going for your house. A person I trust, who knows a lot about wildlife told me about that, but I did not try it myself.

For me, the Ropell worked fine on our cedar siding (large part of our house is field stone and brick).

But what really did the trick was when we had the cedar repainted. Evidently the woodpeckers have not liked the new paint as they briefly tried and then never returned. Haven't been a problem for about 2 years now.

I think I can get you the name of the brand of paint, if that would help.

Just torch the house...the woodpecker will have plenty of time to fly away without being killed or maimed. Or just use anti-woodpecker spray.

In addition to what MSU '73 said, you can also buy a plastic owl at your local hardware store and hang it by where the woodpecker keeps knocking, that worked for me before.

Fighting the battle in a nature preserve against four species of woodpeckers over many years led us to this conclusion:

The only true solution is to get rid of the burrowing insects in and around your eves. Most likely it's carpenter bees or wasps if it's not termites. We tried the amateur solutions but the situation got worse. Bring in a pro.

If they come back, spray them out, then fill in the holes with that foam polyurethane from Home Depot. Woodpeckers hate that stuff, and you can cut it and paint it so it looks like the surrounding wood.

No more woodpeckers.

Not a single joke about turning a wood pecker into a soft pecker? This board is losing it.
