I know you're going to argue the last 3 on that list in terms of historical return with success in each program in the last 15 years, but if you're willing to go back that far, where does one draw the line? MSU football has provided some spectacular times depending on how "historical" one wants to get.
Here's the attendance data: NCAA Football Attendance - NCAA.org

You're right, I take major exception with that list. another argument for another time I guess. One thing is for sure, helluva lot easier to watch ****ty football is 70 degrees and sunny.

Believe it or not guys, but there are other things in LIFE other than MSU football. Most people, who even love state unconditionally, cannot drive 1.5 hours from Detroit to Lansing, tailgate, drive home...
There are things to do around the house, painting, life! I watch state every game and was lucky to go to the NW game. It was fantastic. But I cannot afford the $$ or the time week in/week out.
Get a ****ing life.

I agree with Mike. This team has been a disappointment. So not going doesn't make you less of a fan. Is it disappointing to see the stadium 3/4 full or 1/2 full yeah. But it doesn't mean you aren't a "true" fan.

Not at all. Just bored watching 600 pounds of pitcher on Fox.

I guess the only string I'm hanging onto is that this team hasn't quit yet. In 2002 and 2006 you could visibly tell that the team didn't want to be there anymore.

I agree. Time=Money unless you have very little going on in your life.
MSU football is an investment in more ways than one....and usually returns very little. Sad but true.
I marvel at the old timers who have been doing this for 40+ years....when is enough enough?

And I take exception to that statement - I frankly find it much more enjoyable to watch football at 40 degrees and overcast - I hate the sunburn I get in early season games. All I was pointing out is that your original premise of "NO other fanbase fills a 70k+ stadium for such a little return on the field" was flawed. And it is.

Pretty simple.

So, choosing to do ANYTHING other than being in Spartan Stadium makes someone "less of a Spartan"?
I won't be there for the game and I would put my Spartan Level (over 45 years worth) up against a lot of people who will attend. Simply being there is no realistic measure of support of the team or the University.

No disrespect....but that is a pathetic minimum requirement my Spartan brother.
Our program is way ahead of that, or at least I thought it was. they should win 2 of 3 minimum.

In general, Mike, while I really like listening to the show when I happen to catch it, I don't like your attitude posting here. You seem to come in and present a question for discussion, but then when people disagree you act all condescending, like "yeah well I get paid to talk about sports and you're just some peon on a message board."

Babbling....
I have a friend who may or may not post here. He has been in the game a few years longer than I have. He is honestly the ultimate bandwagoner. He starts every season on a high I have never been on and completely bails once things go south. To the point that he won't even watch games.
I, on the other hand, am all about being "a good fan". Stick with my team, tried and true.
But my friend has taught me something over the years of observing. I was always of the opinion that when we DID win, it would mean more to me. I was wrong. It doesn't. He gets just as hyped as I do. Just not as low during the lows.
Now, I won't take that same approach....I'm still going to back the **** out of my team week in and week out, win or lose....but what maybe it HAS given me perspective on is the fact that I'm 32 years old...and these kids are 18-22. And while it is fun as **** to root for them day in and day out cuz they rep my University....at the end of the day how a bunch of teenagers perform on a football field shouldn't affect my life.
So yeah, I have no problem with people who don't want to go to games because it won't be fun because they don't think we can win. I have no problem with people who continue to go to games because they enjoy it. Do what you will...have fun...enjoy it. Isn't that the point?

As Spartans we have been the most loyal fanbase in the country with respect to return on investment. We continue to burn our hands on the stove week after week expecting differant results only to see the same movie.
Will I be there? Yes, if only to setup our massive tailgate and see the people who are important to me.
But for those who wont go, refuse to go, have better things to do, why are they less of a Spartan? If we are truly honest with ourselves the product this season has been dog****. Last nights game was simply the crowning jewel on this trainwreck. I can see why people with less obligation, less time, less interest will just say "no thanks" this weekend and spend time at home, with family, etc.
But why do people here just lob that phrase around so often? I really think all the disappointment of the last 40 years has warped our sense of loyalty. at some point people just lose interest when they keep getting their hopes dashed.

|
I'll be there but I don't blame anyone who elects to do something else instead of watching the Spartans... MSU can surely wreck a weekend and put you in a foul mood...I can't blame anyone for avoiding that feeling.

Lean football years are easier to stomach because of Izzo. That doesn't make them any less frustrating, it means that we've just got less time to wait before some sense of gratification. We had a pretty embarrassing season, but just a few months later we got to see Drew Neitzel and his boys knock off #1 Wisconsin at Breslin.
It's the life of being a Spartan fan, I guess. The highs are exhilarating, and the lows will make you want to light yourself on fire.

Why are you so sure it will be ****ty football? We didn't play ****ty football against Iowa 8 days ago . The current forecast for next weekend would make it better than the weather for all of our October games. I'll be there, only difference is I may drink more to numb the pain.

this. I'm approaching 30, life is way more complicated and these games mean way less when we lose and exactly the same as always when we win.
Good stuff Zeke.

This.
I do have to agree with the poster here. People are way too quick to jump on others for not coming to the game. If the product on the field is bad, then I see no reason for people to spend money and get little in return. It makes them financially responsible. Simple economic policies don't just fly out the window in sports, if the product sucks, then the consumers won't buy. Build it and they will come. So far nothing has really been built but 70k+ people still come. Pretty impressive if you ask me. But I see no reason to jump on others for not coming, that is their choice. Of course, no need for those people to flaunt the fact that they are not going to show up all over a board full of die-hards either. All that being said, I'll be there on Saturday.
