I know you're going to argue the last 3 on that list in terms of historical return with success in each program in the last 15 years, but if you're willing to go back that far, where does one draw the line? MSU football has provided some spectacular times depending on how "historical" one wants to get.
Here's the attendance data: NCAA Football Attendance - NCAA.org

Thank you...Clemson, South Carolina and Texas A&M were the first three schools that came to mind.

Because a whole lot of people live vicariously through a bunch of 18-22 year old guys and for others to spurn those guys is to spurn the people living vicariously through those guys. That's all it is, it's just a game. Yet you've got these people who aren't satisfied enough with their own accomplishments that they take offense to anyone saying "Sorry, but I've got something better to do than watch a bunch of kids fail to move a missshapen ball across a field as successfully as a different bunch of kids." You could also probably tie in the concept of needing some sort of combat to satisfy primal urges or something of that nature, with the "Spartan Card" thing similar to nationalism and "you're with us or against us." At least this kind of modern play-fight is relatively harmless. Hell, people picnicked and watched the first Battle of Bull Run during the Civil War!

Love ya Red but we havent played good football, truly good football all season.
Iowa game we did alot right and alot wrong. Not punching it in on the goaline...not good. Allowing Stanzi down the field and a critical last second mistake...not good.
NW,Ill. etc. We played ok, but we havent put a 60-minute game together yet. It;s ****ty football. Get the coaches drunk or hooked up to a Poly they would say the same.
Hope all is well.

I am amazed at how many think MSU has one of the greatest fan bases. Go look at the stands next Saturday. South Carolina Now there's a football school.

Couple posters made refference to this so let me lump the response into one...
I know alot of guys who have season tickets and some go no matter what, others have ZERO patience and go to 2 games....
I never imagined a day when going to SS would not be the highlight of my week. times change. the product doesnt. dont know when I'll decide to just not bother and thought this was an interesting question.

"No other fanbase, blah, blah, blah."
"Here are several schools with higher capacity stadiums that continually sell out despite awful programs. By the way, the list does not include UCLA, Kentucky, Arizona State, Washington, Illinois, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Ole Miss, Arizona, or Kansas, all of which have had programs comparable to ours but have 50-70,000 per game attendance."
"Doesn't count. 70 degrees."

Yep. Here's the thing, though: How much of that is coaching and how much of it is simply not having the running threat there? We just don't have a bruiser right now that can mow people down to get three yards. I dunno if it's Caper or the O-line, but we just don't have it. That being the case, the opposing defense just needs to worry about the pass and tell the D-line to make sure you get a good push.

Did I say I was any better? I enjoy the game. I enjoy playing it, I enjoy watching others play it. I don't get why people start questioning others when they decide they don't like it that much.

Agree on the 60-minute game. Perhaps we need to start saying the reverse of Michigan's mantra 'one more minute and we would've won the game', maybe 'one less minute and we would've won the game' .

O-Line and VERY suspect formation/playcalling.
We are not a POWER team yet we use power sets to run in obvious running downs.
Pretty simple.

Does our success in the 50s and 60s really have that much impact on this decade? I'm all for the tradition thing but come on, that is not what is still bringing Spartan fans to SS every year

It's the adrenaline rush -- the idea that you're going to miss something special/big if you aren't along for the ride.
Just like sex, drugs, gambling, etc. Nothing more, nothing less. If MSU wins or loses on a given Saturday, does it truly CHANGE your life? Hell no. It's adrenaline, baby.

But if people are on the RCMB, chances are they care a lot, whether they want to admit it or not.

Agree completely with South Carolina. Probably could argue with Arkansas and Clemson, though Clemson has one a NC in the past 30 years.
What Mike is not realizing is, and someone needs to do the math on this. What is the Average graduating class of the universtiy? How big is that school? What type of Alumni do they have? Where are the big metro politan cities located at in regards to this? When you think of the need to travel like the Nebraska folks do it's amazing.
Then I"m just going to guess that with the size of schools the Big Ten has, We have to have 4 or 5 in the top 8 schools nationwide with fan base. It's like asking why a class A school has more fans than a D school here in Michigan. However, it is a provoking question from a provacatour. And it is what it is. We've all answered in the thread.

Square peg, round hole. Sounds like (yecch) Rodriguez's problem last season. Ah well. Two more tailgates, two more times to meet up with friends and see some friends in the band take the field.
