It's crap like this that pisses me off. Sack up and eat a chicken breast, I shouldn't have to go out of my way to find a place that is 'vegan friendly'.
OK, rant over, feel better now.
If that person is your friend you should find a restaurant that serves a vegan friendly item. You can always go to the "cool sounding place" on a night when her friends are coming along.

Seriously...how hard is it for a restaurant to put one vegan/vegetarian item on a menu? Most decent chefs do this for the very sake/situation you are talking about. It sounds like the restaurant wanted to go to is run by someone with poor business savvy.

Making sure your friends are happy is more important than the selfish need to visit the latest trendy place IMO.

Seriously though...it's been a good thread and I'd like to thank all the meat-eaters who participated. Not all vegans hate meat-eaters any more than all meat-eaters hate vegans.

Although a vegan...I'm not a member of PETA for personal reasons. On the other hand...I think they are treated unfairly by the media. They practice what they preach and are passionate about their cause...very similar to people members of the NRA(another group I don't belong to).

Most vegans are not hateful people...although the media and televisions often portray them that way. I've also noticed that a lot of people who dislike vegans have never actually known one very well and base their opinion mostly on caricatures.

All of my friends are meat-eaters and I honestly don't have one single close friend that's a vegetarian. Although a vegan myself...I don't base friendship on what people eat.

One the other hand...if you ever meet a vegan that refuses to shake your hand because you are wearing a leather watch...you have my personal "vegan" permission to tell them to "F-Off".

I would like to add that I have never been treated poorly by meat-eaters.

When people find out I'm a vegan they...more than anything...just seem interested in finding out why.

I just tell them that I do it for health reasons. Although there are ethic and environmental reasons for why I do it...I feel don't believe in forcing my personal ethics upon other people.

I'm more interested in finding out what I have in common with someone else than I am in what makes us different.

Meat eating came later - well, instects were eaten first.

We don't need animal furs or skins NOW, so what does that have to do with choices people make now. It's quite a leap you're making. It's hard to measure actual intelligence, but vegans and vegetarians do tend to have higher than average education.

I guess my point is, you can disagree with someone without calling them stupid. Maybe you missed that day of kindergarten

Man, why the eff do some of you care that people are vegans? Me? I love a good steak. I'm not gonna say I've never felt some decent guilt before because I know the way the meat industry works. I've even really tried to cut back on my meat consumption. But if someone makes a lifestyle change for their beliefs, I say good for them for sticking to their convictions.

I like how people think they're going to 'catch me' by saying that my shoes have to be leather. It's not that hard to find shoes that aren't leather, folks. 95% of shoes have print on the actual shoe somewhere saying either 'all man-made materials', 'leather upper', 'cuero vero', 'suede', or they show a picture of an animal pelt. If I can't tell, I don't buy it. Simple.

EDIT: In the interest of full disclosure, it IS kinda a pain in the ass to find good non-leather shoes. Well except running shoes, which are easy to find. But it's worth it to me. It's that whole 'making choices for yourself' thing. I recommend everyone do it.

Well that's my point. Non leather (read: plastic) shoes are terrible. Feet sweat, stink, shoes crack, etc. Sorry, but for "dress" shoes, nothing but leather will do.

A lot of them are, sure. It takes effort to find good ones, effort that you've never had a reason to put forth. Most people just look at cost and quality, I look at those factors and add in my ethical considerations as well.

I'm very comfortable calling people stupid that suggest it's "exploitive" or "wrong" to eat honey and wear wool, especially if they state it in terms of moral absolutes.

If they want to talk about this being a preference or a good thing to do, we can have a discussion about it. The vegans I've encountered don't tend to talk about the issues in that way.

It's amazing how you people know so many vegans when I, a vegetarian of nearly 16 years, am only friends with one true vegan and have had discussions with only a few others in my life.

Many vegans are mainly concerned with the ethical treatment of the animals, and since you can never be REALLY sure what happens to your food/products before they get to you, they just remove themselves from the equation entirely. Most vegans are intelligent people who are devoted to their beliefs, and the in-your-face ones that get on TV give everyone else a bad rap. Perhaps that's why you have such a bad impression of vegans. How would you know someone was a vegan unless you a) had a meal with them or b) they just told you for no reason. In my professional career I've had several coworkers that I would eat lunch with regularly, and they wouldn't know I was a vegetarian for weeks or months. I just don't see a need to talk about it unless there's a reason.

Just think what these people could have accomplished had their brains been able to develop properly.
How many of them were raised vegetarian as children? The issue is not their adult diet. With the right mix of vegetarian foods, you can maintain an adult human brain with no problem. The critical time is the first few years, when most of the brain growth occurs. I would wager that, to the extent we know, most of these were raised on an omnivorous diet as children and became vegetarians only later, but let me know if you have any evidence to the contrary for any of them.
