Is it just me, or has Izzo stepped it up big time?
Recruiting-wise... I mean we were never doing terribly, but in my gut I feel the average "star count" of each class has to have jacked up noticeably in the last 4 years or so.
2006: Morgan/Dahlman/Herzog (4 stars each)
2007: Lucas/Summers/Allen/Thornton (4, 5, 4, 2)
2008: Luciuos/Roe/Green (4, 5, 4)
2009: Nix/Sherman (4, 4)
2010: Payne/Gauna/Byrd/Appling (5, 4, 4, 4)
2011: Kearney/???? (4)

While "stars" are used to evaluate a player - I think player development is also key. The coaches who can recruit average players and turn them into great players are great coaches.
The coaches who can recruit 4 and 5 star guys consistently are great recruiters.

I just rewatched the MSU/UConn game highlights, and it's just amazing how well Izzo not only recruits players to his mold, but helps them improve all their skills, especially defense.
Izzo is the best friggin coach out there.

Izzo has gotten the program to the point where it pretty much recruits itself. That is truly amazing.

This type of recruiting is what you get when you have a coach who cares about his university and its players and not so much about the money and getting ahead in his career. It creates a stable environment for recruits and he has proven that he cares

To a degree. I think that's really most effective regionally. Look at Dexter Strickland, super start PG Frosh at UNC. We were his leader for a loooong time. Then suddenly, UNC gets involved, and and poof, he's off the market. He's from NJ. Within the midwest, I think you're right though

UNC/Duke/UCLA/Kansas' brands are based on who they are as a school. MSU's brand is all about who the head coach is.

Remember the Neitzel hype?
He has been at this level since about 2001...

Duke is Duke because of one thing and one thing only. Coach K. And Kansas/UCLA/Kentucky (Allen/Wooden/Rupp) are the brands they are because of one coach making them winners for a long time. Because of Izzo's success (coupled with 79 and Izzo' future success) MSU will be a brand based on who MSU is as a school after Izzo leaves. Izzo wants one more championship because he knows what it will do for MSU after he leaves.

I see what you're saying, but I don't see it entirely the same way. If Coach K jumped ship and Duke hired some random guy, they'd still recruit like crazy. Duke pre-Coach K had arguably more of a winning tradition than MSU pre-Izzo. (Not to mention that K has been at his school much longer than Izzo).
If some random guy coached Duke, Duke could still recruit on the basis of being Duke and on the rivalry with UNC.
If some random guy coached MSU, MSU wouldn't be recruiting the way we are now UNLESS we were coached by a guy who is a respected coach who has an appeal.
Sorry, but Duke is on another level when it comes to being a "brand" than MSU, even if MSU has performed better on the hardwood in recent years.

Just nitpicking, I know, but 2000 was the class of Marcus Taylor and Zach Randolph. I know we only had Taylor for two years and Randolph for one, but no one can say they weren't excellent recruits.

Sure seems like it. He looks like he's searching for that ceiling talent now instead of just a certain mold, or character.

Right after the loss to UNC in December. Mike made an ass of himself with that classic thread.

To be precise, a lot of people made asses of themselves after that game.
