We are all being shamelessly exploited. There is nothing new or different being offered of value. My God, the RCMB is becoming like the banks - "How can we squeeze more out of the sheep." The only thing on this site of value is the posters themselves and you treat them like a bunch of suckers.

A few things of note:
  • All current Varsity Members will still be grandfathered into the Varsity Member level.
  • There is now a new intermediate membership level, Starter Level Membership, that has the same features that our previous "donor" level had. These funds will go to support this site.
  • There is now a monthly payment option for the Varsity Membership Level.
  • Currently you can only pay annually for Starter Level Membership.
  • ESPN Insider access is included with each Varsity Membership purchased (or renewed) between now and 12/05/2009.
  • A premium forum for chatting with our writers is in development, but the RCMB will remain the primary discussion forum on the site.
  • We are also developing premium chats.
  • We will be slowly ramping up the amount of home page news stories and Varsity Member features over the next several months, so please be patient. I can't begin to count the number of hours that I personally have put into this over the past several months.
I don't know... $60 is up there. I think the middle level should have a little more value to attract donors. I would add Jack's column to the middle level.

From where I'm sitting... I would either go all in or nothing. I would do the middle level if Jack's column was there. All the high end exclusive stuff with the exception of Jack's column doesn't add much value to me. Just some thoughts...

Giving a site away for free for 15 years is treating users like suckers? I guess we can agree to disagree. If I was independantly wealthy I'd be able to keep that up but given our growth, that's not realistic. I wish MSU gave away football and basketball season tickets but realize that they need to make ends meet.

I appreciate the modified price structure. I love the site, but it will take a lot to make me want to pay $60. It was looking like I was going walk on until this came out.
Frankly, this site gives me pride about being a Spartan...it is superior to other places I have seen. I'll check out the Varsity value.
Let's hope the board doesn't get too corporate in its policies. Cracking down on obscenity was excellent. That stuff detracted from the board and the **** now is comical instead.
But will you begin paying tendentiousb and spartyno to troll the board and gin up posting traffic? Will you begin promoting figure skating threads to attract more women? Will you begin deleting criticisms of

This "internet message board" is a thousand times different than a basketball program or football program.

What makes this message board work is that it is (was) free and that means you get the volume of members needed to be of value (see facebook and the like). When you have such a large volume of members you can make your profits from other sources.

If you have premium boards and non-premium, then you are dividing your asset (the large volume of members). In the end neither will ever be like the RCMB, which is the only thing anybody wanted anyway.

You could add the ESPN insider stuff, and keep RCMB the same. Didn't you learn this yourself when you stole everyone away from Spartanmag.com?

Pretty bitter for a walk-on. You do realize the basic forum is still free. I really don't see too many people going for the full blown membership. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I see.

Let me remove my mod hat for a second and say that for as much time as I spend on here and the amount of laughs and other intangables that tRCMB has given me over the years...the $35.40 for the starter status is well worth the money. If I was into the whole "follow recruits" thing the full package would definatly be worth it. Looks like a good plan Trevor.

Trevor.

Realizing that everyone's budget is different, I can't help but wonder how many current Varsity members are even reconsidering the "value" of these changes. As mentioned, it's a lousy cup or 2 of Starbucks or (for some) a good reason to buy a few less packs of smokes each month....or a few less beers.

Judging from the thousands of posts from hundreds of members, there must be a tremendous amount of VALUE derived given the sum total of time everyone spends here.

There seems to be a huge disconnect in understanding here. Maybe it's my fault for not explaining it, but no one is talking about changing the RCMB. It'll be the same thing it's always been, for better or worse. It will always be the primary discussion forum on the site. The only forum we've discussed creating is a forum where users could interact with our writers. While potentially insightful and a different vibe than we've had here, I see it far more as a niche board. The RCMB is where most of the discussion will remain and noone is talking about making it a premium forum.

When we added the recruiting forums people had similar fears about content being "taken away" from the RCMB. In fact that hasn't been the case at all and those boards have worked out far better than my expectations. There is far more recruiting discussion than we've ever had on the site. I see any additional forum as a similar complementing forum to the RCMB, not as competition.

People need to understand that the status quo was not sustainable for the site or for me really.

As far as SpartanMag, with all due respect to them, our forums have been around longer than theirs and always had more traffic, users and posts. So I doubt any of their users have been "stolen." There's got to be a big misunderstanding on your part there.

Why weren't those already paying ESPN for Insider info considered? Now they have to pay twice?

I thought many people had mentioned this.

I'm ashamed I haven't donated yet, and once I get settled in my current situation I plan to become a starter. This is a great site and it's amazing it's grown like this. Trevor has done a heck of a job.

BTW, this whole thing sort of reminds me of Back to the Future for some reason.

ESPN Insider came into this whole discussion very late in the game. Right now we're just doing a trial to see how it works out during the next month. There are a few different sites doing the trial right now.

...but what time is the game on in Dubai?

Seriously though, that scale sounds good to me. Only question I have is by "Grandfathered" in, does that mean that ALL current Varsity members get ALL the goods? Or is it only the ones that pony up the dough between now and Dec 5th?

It is of little consequence to me. I don't see myself reading much of the ESPN Insider information, but would be curious to see if I qualified. I'm paid up through mid November of next year.

I don't think there was really anything you could do about it.

I'm wondering if you still think the Ware personal foul put Iowa closer to the end zone on the final play of the game... http://www.spartantailgate.com/forums/msu-red-cedar-message-board/409211-lets-circle-back-pf-ware.html
