just watched 97 Purdue game on Big Ten Network...
Worst game ever. Nice effort on the onside kick from Sedrick. Also had to love Gardner's choke job on the final kick. What a disaster. Amazing to see Saban now. He looked lost back then.

The 97 Purdue game made this year's loss to CMU look like something State fans should be proud of.

Interesting the conversation they had with Burke on the BTN. His quote was:
"On the onside kick, one of our best players, Sedrick Irvin lined up in the wrong spot. Love you Sedrick, but he lined up in the wrong spot."

I was at that game as a kid. That is the day I learned that Ross-WTFever Stadium was a joke and the majority of PU football fans are *******s.

I've never been as mad about a game as I was that day. Just an epic, epic meltdown. If the team literally makes one play, it's over. I remember early on in his stint at LSU, Saban said he "learned to win" at MSU, meaning that he figured out how to close out games based on losing some tough ones here. Great. Good for you, Nick...

It was actually Dantonio who said that. Just watched it as well. Awful. We make so many average teams and players look like all stars and Heisman winners.

For those of you youngun's out there, it's not a TRUE collapse of epic SOS proportions if it doens't include:
- a blown 11 point lead with 3 minutes left
- a Blocked field goal returned for a touchdown
- an onside kick recovery
- another touchdown
- a missed game winning field goal as time expires
(mind you this is all in the last 3 minutes of the game)
God I hate that effer Saban. It's not that he left us for $$$ and stuck us with Booby. It's that he turned out to be great and yet showed NONE of that greatness at MSU. Quite the opposite in fact!

Actually, I think Dean Pees was the DC.

The Northwestern game in '97 was a dandy too, that little Gardner missed a chipshot to win as well. He was a pretty crappy kicker.
I remember in the NW game settling for a short field goal attempt and not trying to punch it in. I wonder how that Michigan game would have been different with both teams at 6-0. Oh well, same ---- different year.

The replay of that game said, MD was the DC from 95 to 2000. Just read his resume, and he was the seconday coach under NS, and assistant head coach the last year.

That game was my brush with Spartantailgate fame. I actually went to the game with Trevor back in the RCMB infancy.

Interesting to keep in mind considering the state of the board lately.

The funny thing about Gardner is that his average wasn't that bad. I can't put it into context of the average length of his attempt, but the guy basically ranks 4th in accuracy of the top kickers in MSU history coming into this season in terms of field goals made.

It's nice to know that nothing has changed. If have been watching msu football choke away wins since 1981. SOS. New coach but same eff ups that lead to losses.

I'm sure I've told this story here before but it is worth repeating. I was watching the game on TV with a buddy and my son. When MSU set up for the field goal late in the game, my buddy said this:"This kick is going to get blocked and returned for a TD. Purdue will recover the on-side kick, march down the field and win the game!!!!" Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. My son looked at my buddy and asked how he KNEW that was going to happen. By buddy's response: "Watch MSU football for another 15 years and you will understand, young man".

We read a lot about how Izzo and Saban are still good buddies, but I wonder if Dantonio and Saban talk to one another as well?

Throw in the fact that MSU had intercepted PU to put us in the position to kick the field goal, (promptly did nothing to advance the ball), such that this should have been sealing the deal. The announcers are discussing, in advance of the kick, whether we should even try it and risk a block. I can remember watching that over at my dad's, party ended real quick.
