We got Roe and they got Strickland....................its called recruiting Roy, it happens and until you sign on the dotted line, nothing matters.

"So I enjoy recruiting when I get a chance to sit and talk with the kids and their families, and I love recruiting when I get in the gym, but there are other parts of recruiting that really stink. It can be demeaning. Kids have lied to me. I once had a recruit ask me to gather all of my assistant coaches and secretaries and everybody else we could find into my office, so he could commit to me in front of a huge group.
We all cheered and hugged, and then six weeks later he called to tell me he was going to Michigan State"
And that kid's name was....Tom Herzog

that was debunked by Spartanmag in a video interview w/ Will Gholston. He said he missunderstood the question he thought the guy was asking him IF he had decided to take other visits where would he have visited. Will ended the interview by saying he was sorry if he upset any MSU fans and that we shouldn't worry that he was going to be a Spartan and he had no intentions of taking any visits anywhere.

Yeah, unfortunately, those were two unspeakable jailsexings
Roy has always struck me as being above this kind of talk, so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure it was a frustrating situation, and none of us know how the frontlines of recruiting truly work. Obviously, it's unfair to Roe to go after him in this book, as it's not exactly difficult to realize which player he is talking about to the more informed college basketball fans out there.

I've never had a problem with Roy Williams, but he is really coming off as a spoiled brat who believes he has a birthright to any recruit he wants.

Will Gholston has made his commitment to MSU public. Delvon committed to UNC, but it wasn't public information.

you are aware, aren't you, that roy led the charge for calling the game differently to take the physicality out of basketball after we bull rushed our way to a championship in 2000 right? I've always though roy was a colossal ***** (rhymes with koossy)

Gather up all the secretaries and assistants? Did he really think if he said "I don't think that's possible right now Delvon" he would've said "SCREW THAT, NOT COMMITING NOW K THX BYE" It wasn't a big deal for Roy to do that.
I'm sure he's gone to a HELL of a lot more trouble to try to land other recruits and not won that battle. They're 17 and 18 years old. Obviously they're not allowed to second guess the biggest decision of their lives
If Gholston looks at us after this year and thinks we're on a downward trend, I can't be mad at him for decommiting. Sometimes its right, sometimes its wrong (i.e. Nickles)

Roy doesn't mention Roe by name, so I'm not sure I'd call it classless. He's rightfully pointing out one of the things that all coaches hate.
Hell, Jamil Wilson never verbally committed (or maybe he did by some of the insiders on here) to Izzo, and was called every name under the sun on this board just a few months ago. Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

He may not have called him out by name... but it was beyond obvious who he was talking about.
And it's different for a bunch of message board fans to call out a player. A coach doing so in a public way is totally different.

Is this a quote from the book?
This is the supposed "cheap shot"? I don't really see anything wrong with this. He doesn't even name the recruit, which presumably is Roe.
(And I'm totally in the 10% on the Tom Herzog reference)

He might as well mention Roe's name because it's very obvious, but the fact that he doesn't do that is what makes it a petty comment, in my opinion. Either say, "I've had people give me a commitment then later end up choosing another school," or be upfront about the baggage you are carrying.

It would have been fine if he said "We all cheered and hugged, and then six weeks later he called to tell me he was going to another school." But by saying Michigan State, he might as well have written Delvon Roe because anyone paying attention knows that's exactly who Roy is talking about.

Don't see the problem. It happened and he mentioned it's a part of recruiting he doesn't like. Everything's true in the anecdote. Besides if it went down like that then Roe did kinda lie to him. Didn't say he was fuming about it, just that he doesn't like incidents like that.

Unnecessary to make it that clear who he is talking about. Roy is a good guy, but he's unabashedly smug.
I hope we shame them on their home court.

I doubt the identity of the recruit is obvious to many people outside of hard core MSU and UNC fans.
And, hearing Roy Williams talk about MSU out-recruiting him doesn't seem like a bad thing.

To say he was "bashing" is a bit of a stretch. It's a book. Writing a book requires you to give your thoughts on lots of different stuff, which may or may not include your likes and dislikes about recruiting.
Get over it.

But it is obvious to hardcore fans and journalists, who will pick up on this and it will become common knowledge.
Roy handled this wrong. Should never have named the school.
