MSU student killed by car after Wings game

BY TAMMY STABLES BATTAGLIA
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

A 19-year-old Michigan State University student leaving a Red Wings hockey game with friends Thursday night was dragged more than a quarter-mile under a car and killed, police said.
The student, a Michigan native whose name investigators were not releasing this morning pending the notification of family, was hit near COBO Hall at about 10 p.m., according to the Detroit Police.
Investigators believe the driver may not have known the student was under the car as he was dragged up Washington Street. The car sped away, leaving his body near Michigan and Washington Boulevard, where a homeless man described the vehicle as a white Cadillac. Detroit Police Fatal Squad personnel will be reviewing surveillance tapes from hotels and businesses downtown today for an accurate description of the car, an officer said this morning.

Police said the downtown area was flooded with hockey fans when the accident happened, many of them Michigan State students. The Detroit Red Wings were playing the San Jose Sharks Thursday night. Detroit won, 2-1, after a shootout.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Detroit Police Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260

OK, maybe, but you would think the driver might notice that he actually had hit a person and he might stop long enough to make sure that person is ok.

How does one not know you've hit something?? It's not like what they hit was small like a rabbit, it was a person..how do you not hear the noise of hitting someone?? Definately more to the story....

How tragic...thoughts go out to the family

No license, no insurance, I bet. Unfortunately you see this all the time in the D.

Renee Beavers, woman with 45 driving offenses and no license, gets her day in court | Detroit News - - MLive.com

Police Chief Evans even commented about how unbelievaly common it is in a newspaper article.

Very sad. I can't imagine what went through the minds of his friends/family when this happened. This is not just confined to the D, happened here in Pa. recently too.

This is a prime example of why all sales of alcohol should be banned at sporting events.

Police say not only was a Detroit woman driving a stolen car with a 24-ounce can of beer between her legs, but her license had been suspended 45 times.
How the hell was her license REINSTATED 44 times?? You would think after maybe oh... 3-4 times, maybe its not a good idea to give her back her license...but 44 times??

Expect alcohol related incidents to increase at the Joe this year.... The Palace too for that matter. Both franchises have had to find creative / affordable ways to fill seats this season and that will result in a different element in attendance.

The corporate crowd is slowly being replaced by the Budweiser crowd and it'll show.

Depends on what they mean by suspsended. Tecnically mine's been suspended probably twenty-some or thirty-some times. If you don't pay your tickets or fines on time (which I never do), it's suspended until you do. Probably had my suspended 6 or 7 times in the last year and some change all for the same incident. Now if they mean 45 actual ordered suspensions, that's impressive. Even those, after the time is up you just get your license back.

Yup. There's a natural progression back and forth with almost every sports franchise.
