Quick question regarding our hockey program.
National Champions 2007
One of worst Spartan Hockey teams ever 2008
Back to the top of the college hockey world with a win over #1 and #10 2009.
I know the only thing consistent about Michigan State is its inconsistency, but really?

Throughout the 80's to mid 2000's the hockey team was most consistent - it finished in the top 2 of the CCHA and made the post season regionals each year but then usually lost in the regionals. All the while it had one of the best win/lose percentages of the major college teams. Very consistent until the past 4-5 years.

Look at Comley's stellar record at NMU - he did the exact same inconsistent crap - had one NCAA championship and many years where they were horrible including one classic 7 win season. This is no different. Mason proved that MSU can be a consistent power in college hockey. Once we get a top notch coach in here, there is no doubt we will return to that status.

The loss of Bryan Lerg and Abdelkader were too much to overcome I guess. I am glad Corey Tropp is doing good though.

So I said to the guy, "I noticed your Michigan sweatshirt, did you go there"? He replied "No, I have always been a fan though. I actually bought this at Walmart."

Mason - 1 NCAA title
Comley - 1 NCAA title
Mason was great during the regular season and CCHA playoffs but always fell short in the NCAA tournament. With all the top teams he had he should have had at least 2 or 3 more NCAA titles. We will see if Comley can get more than 1.

Paging Bill O'Crap's defense of Comley...paging Bill O'Crap's defense of Comley.
To summarize what has been already said about Comley's record at NMU and what is likely to be a continuation of any future years of him steering the hockey ship aground at MSU:

Tim Kennedy also left.

I'm not obesessed with records or championships. As a former kid's coach, I just enjoy watching solid effort and fundamental team play. If those things happen together, the talent at MSU should always win more than it loses. I haven't seen the team play this year, but I am glad they are doing well. That being said, Comley's entire body of work has at MSU has been a disappointment from the perspective of consistency and entertaining hockey.

To be fair, Comley then has 3. He also won one of those NAIA National Championships - 1974, also with Lake Superior State.

Comley teams definitely seem to have peaks and valleys but last season seemed to be a perfect storm of losing top players to graduation, etc. and then having a lot of injuries, the Sturges fiasco and the fiasco with Tropp and the other player agaisnt SCum towards the end of the season.
Is Comley the best coach we could have? Maybe, maybe not. That said, if he is here for 10 years and we go up and down but win 2-4 conference titles and 2-3 NCAA titles in that time frame I think it is hard to complain. Only time will tell as to how his tenure will play out but it is certainly encouraging to see the hockey team playing some very good hockey early in the season, which is something it has not done in any season during Comley's tenure.

Comley has been here 8 years. He has won zero regular season championships and one playoff championship. And of course one NCAA championship. Unless he suddenly becomes the next Scotty Bowman he will not reach any of the goals you stated. So it won't be so hard for you to complain after all.
