This thread is pretty dumb. Noone is happy with how the season ended or with the season in general...least of all Coach D.
Getting on his case for not ignoring his players, etc after they come off the field is just dumb... most of these kids know they ****ed up and kicking them when they're down certainly won't make them play harder, looser or smarter.
I remember my hockey coach in HS was one of those *******s that always yelled when someone did something dumb...by the end of the season everyone was so scared to make a mistake or just didn't give a **** anymore (yell-flation if you will) that the guy just looked like a moron yelling all the time and our team played tight and made more mistakes than if there was a little more positive re-enforcement and actual coaching.
Watch Izzo...even when guys **** up...he doesn't just get pissed, he sits down and talks to them about it or has an assistant do it... he doesnt just berate them and go about his business...that's just pointless...the goal is to 1. fire people up and 2. help them realize their atheltic potential. Sometimes that's mean giving a high five on blown coverage because you want guy to know you have their back and so they'll actually pay attention when you help them to be better.

A coach should constantly encourage his players to try when the chips are down. Doing what he does lets his players know that he has their back. With the combination of coaching blunders/lack of skilled players in the defensive backfield giving the players an attaboy for doing what they can is not wrong. That is why he is coaching this team and none of us are. If he didnt have the horses this year there is nothing else he can do other than keep working on making them better players and men. Personally Id rather have a coach that gives me the positives when I **** up during a game and then work with me (read yell, run, drill etc) during the week at practice. There is a time and a place for everything...and ripping a guy on the sidelines during a game or throwing someone under the bus during a press confernce is not what a good coach does.

If a team was 21 or lower, they were unranked, as far as he was concerned.
So right now the glass is half full with guys who can't track receivers, can't wrap up on tackles, and can't push a DL on runs. But the team did enough otherwise - including FINALLY clamping down on Purdue - to make some bowl. Where is YOUR perspective, pal?

It doesn't matter where he is from. It also doesn't matter that he refused to acknowledge that college football is no the same as it was 40 years ago. Does he refuse to believe that players wear plastic helmets with facemasks? He must be capable of some amazing self delusions. Maybe he should give time travel a try.

It would be nice if some of the fans would stop playing pretend, and face facts. JLS was a crappy recruiter, and sure recruiting rankings aren't everything. However, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out he really struggled. When you looked at offer lists and saw Purdue, Buffalo and Northern Illinois next to half our recruits you had to know it wasn't good. Also, his one good class fell apart, '05 I think. It was down to less than 10 players in the fall of 2007.
So, what is MD to say? We are making progress, and we should expect more in '10 and '11.

If Kansas gets rid of Mangino, MSU should pick him up to be the assistant coach of yelling. That way Dantonio can keep trying to build them up, and Mangino can break them down.
I get that there's frustration, I'm sick of seeing MSU players in coverage in position but not playing the ball. That's been going on all year and hasn't been fixed. But if you think that a coach that constantly yells at players during the game is going to improve that...well, I think your wrong. That will work here and there to get a point across for a serious mistake (usually personal fouls or dangerous play), but constant yelling about mistakes during a game and it won't be long before players tune that out and stop wanting to play for that coach.

Colonel: Marine, what is that button on your body armour?
Joker: A peace symbol sir.
Colonel: Where’d you get it?
Joker: I don’t remember sir.
Colonel: What is that you’ve got written on your helmet?
Joker: ‘Born to Kill’ sir.
Colonel: You write ‘Born to Kill’ on your helmet, and you wear a
peace button. What’s that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Joker: No, sir.
Colonel: Well what is it supposed to mean?
Joker: I don’t know, sir.
Colonel: You don’t know very much do you?
Joker: No sir.
Colonel: You better get your head and your ass wired together or I
will take a giant **** on you.
Joker: Yes sir.
Colonel: Now answer my question, or you’ll be standing tall before
The Man.
Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality
of man sir.
Colonel: The what?
Joker: The duality of man, the Jungian thing, sir.
Colonel: Who’s side are you on, son?
Joker: Our side, sir.
Colonel: Don’t you love your country?
Joker: Yes, sir.
Colonel: Well how about getting with the program? Why don’t you
jump on the team and c’mon in for the big win?
Joker: Yes, sir.
Colonel: Son, all I’ve ever asked of my Marines is for them to obey
my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the
Vietnamese because inside every ****, there is an American trying
to get out. It’s a hardball world, son. We’ve got to try to keep
our heads until this peace craze blows over.
Joker: Aye aye, sir.

Bingo, MSU needs a coach like Mangino. A tough no nonsense coach who reminds players they can go back home and get shot like their dead siblings or be alcoholics like their fathers. Born2kill is right. We need tougher coaches at MSU.
I know people who played for Duffy, Muddy, Saban, Darryl Rogers, Bo Schembechler,Carr, Dan Devine, Lou Holtz, Woody Hayes, Barry Switzer, Chuck Fairbanks, Bud Wilkinson, Ferentz, Hayden Fry, JoPa and and Bear Bryant. LIke any fan you ask "What's he really like?"
Every one of those guys said that the coaches were stone cold when it came to straight talk on what a player had to do to keep a position and sometimes a spot on the team. But they all said they would defend their players in public even if they turned right around and ripped them in private.
Don't assume MD is some kind of softie because of his public face.
