Do the Youtube "stars" make any money from their videos?
I was wondering about this if any of the most subscribed Youtube people get compensation from all the hits they get on their videos.
For example, people like Smosh, Shane Dawson, that Fred kid, a number of asian guys in their basement , Chris Crocker etc etc. They get a ton of hits on their videos for some odd reason.
Whenever I log on to t he front page, its the same peoples' videos which is kind of annoying.
I especially cant stand that Phillip DeFranco guy. Complete assbag and it boggles my mind why anyone would subscribe to his vids and listen to what that guy thinks.

I dunno...the chick who now plays "Erin" on the "Office" became wildly known for putting her comedy sketches on You Tube before she got that job.
So that turned out ok for her.

There's a South Park episode about this...

tRCMB should make a youtube video. Maybe something along the lines of We are the World or Do they Know it's Christmas Time - get as many RCMBers in the video as possible.
That would be epic in a completely nerdrific-socially awkward-conversationally uncomfortable way.

As far as the videos go... no. The money is made on "appearences" and performances. Many artists use youtube as a stepping stone to get to the next level.

you don't get much from the video itself but you can make some money by parlaying the video into a real gig, or be used to sponsor a product.
The Chocolate Rain kid did ads for Dr. Pepper Cherry Chocolate beverage
YouTube - "Cherry Chocolate Rain" Original Song by Tay Zonday
The I'm into Nuggets Kids - Had their video bought by McDonalds.
YouTube - McNuggets Rap - McDonald's commercial
Red vs Blue - have been used to promote Halo as a viral campaign
YouTube - Red vs. Blue: ODST Episode 01
Plus you would be suprise how many TV show that have come out in the last few years got their starts as online shorts
Always Sunny (huge success)
Secret Girl Friend (huge failure)
are a couple examples of this. Heck kid cudi got his big break by plastering Day and Night all over youtube channels and itunes

I've heard of the live streaming sites (Ustream, Stickam, Blogtv) compenating some of their more popular members.

I got an offer from youtube to start running ads on the one video I have posted simply because it got 50,000 views. I make more of the internets than Big Sean

Read the article above. I love when someone chimes in with such authority and they don't know WTF they are talking about.

Can online video stars make a living JUST off of YouTube? Yes. What kind of viewership do you need in order to do it? I’m not exactly sure, but if you have at least 286,000 channel subscribers and average somewhere around 300,000 views on the two or three videos you upload a week, you’ll definitely be able to quit your day job.
