Is MSU planning to change the Spartan logo?
I was digging around the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's TESS trademark search and saw that Michigan State University registered this on December 23, 2009:
Here is this logo compared to the traditional logo:
Is MSU planning to change logos?

Likely someone else was using it/planning to use it, MSU thought it looked too much like the Spartan Helm logo, decided they didn't want anyone infringing on the brand and bought the trademark rights to it.

Looks like amateur hour. Any history buffs? Is our current logo accurate? If so -- don't fix it.

I guess that's plausible, but it's seems like a lot of trouble. MSU has registered this for use in a variety of goods and services, like:
- basketballs, footballs, golfballs, golf bags
- athletic uniforms, baby bibs, baseball hats, booties, boots, cheerleader outfits, gloves, hats, jackets, jerseys, mittens, pants, polo shirts, ponchos, rain suits, sandals, scarves, shirts, shoes, shorts, skirts, slippers, socks, sweaters, sweatbands, sweatpants, sweatshirts, tanks, t-shirts, tops, turtlenecks, vests, warm up suits, wristbands
Check serial numbers 77900295, 77900302, 77900309, 77900312, 77900315 and 77900317 in the TESS search -- they are all this logo with different goods and services listed.
Seems possible that a change might be in the works...

Is it time to come down on all the little podunk colleges and the high schools that use the MSU logo in violation of our trademarks?

Interesting...Serial # 77900317 talks about 'educational services, providing courses of instruction and continuing education at the college level...'
I don't see why we would trademark this for educational purposes, unless they planned on using it. Hope they don't. It screams Conference USA.

I bet this will end up on those crappy non-replica jerseys that Wal-mart etc sell.

Not a history buff at all but I bought a brass Spartan helmet a few years back and looking at the side profile, I would say the new one appears more accurate. Then again, its just a replica helmet so there is no saying that my helmet is historically correct either.
