Off-topic Hop planting and last Avg. last freeze day in Michigan

When is the average last day of freezing temperatures in Michigan, specifically in Ann Arbor? I've got some Cascade rhyzomes that need planting.

Thanks.

Whoo hooo beer!

If you just got it via mail, it's probably still dormant. Go ahead and put it in the ground now since the ground is thawed. It won't start poking up till the time is right, which may be soon despite the frost potential. My established hops are already starting to break the surface. If it's already got leaves on it (out of dormancy) you might want to pot it and wait till mid May to put it out.

FWIW, I'm getting some Cascade this spring as well.

Cheese, good rule of thumb is Mother's Day. I'm drooling for some Apricot fermented Hops

Just because its a seed doesn't mean its dormant... i don't know much specifically about hops, but if its a cold-temperature sensative hop, i'd say them in some pots in a warm room, and wait until memorial day to put them in the ground outside.

Tulips are hardy along with most bulbs. Wait until Mother's Day Cheese. Do the inside thing for now

We had frost on May 24 last year in tc - its alright to put them out as long as you are disciplined to check the weather and cover them if necessary.

We are zone 5, USDA. So the first frost free day is May 20. However, your rizomes will be buried so they have a little more protection and you can plant a little earlier. If it looks like a freeze cover them.

Its a good news bad news deal.

The bad news is that it is only hops, not "hops." Cascade and Willamette varieties mostly for aroma and dry hopping my suds. The other bad news is that the apricot ale won't be done for the Spring game (Dave wouldn't get any anyway as he is going to his precious daughter's chick hoops game ).

The good news is that my dad taught the "professional gardner" of said paralyzer biology. He took my dad's 11th grade bio class at old Pinny High. So, in a not so indirect way, my dad is responsible for the brain warping power of this kid's final product. I'm so proud of my pop.

When they busted the kid he said that the entire semi car full of hydro, lights and crab grass was for personal use only. I suppose this could be true if you needed say 60 or so fatties of one hit wheelchair dum-dum a night to fall asleep.

I digress, the hops go in the ground on May 15th.

In conclusion, the end.

Please add "Apricot Ale" to your signature, right after the word brew.

FYI, the kid's excuse sounds totally sound to me.

A. Whoa! You off the wagon or just interested? Again, whoa!

B. I have a smooth English bitter that should be popular. I under-hopped it so it isn't that bitter. An ale a homebrewer gives to mega-brew drinkers but not to other homebrewers. Other homebrewers would give you backhanded praise such as, "Huh, nice effort," or "Yup, that's a crowd pleaser," or "My dad would love this stuff, he's a Miller guy."
