How much longer before the domestics offer a sedan that gets 52 mpg like the Honda Accord Diesel?

Care to break down the mileage difference compared to the higher price of diesel vs regular unleaded? I am too lazy to either read the artical or do the math myself.

Well since 53 highway mpg is about 75% better than 30 mpg....I'm guessing that Diesel would have to be 75% ( 4.10 gas vs. 7.17 diesel) more expensive than gas to equal out.

But you would still be seen in a Honda Accord......

PS That is not a Honda powerplant and I suspect the German engine and parts in there are a bit more expensive that the regular Honda parts.

True, but it all comes down to the price of the cars you are comparing.

If you are comparing this and a car that gets 30 mpg and you drive 15,000 miles a year, you are saving $709 in fuel a year based on avg. diesel and unleaded prices as of 06/16. If you drive 20,000 miles, it’s $946 a year.

Obviously, if you are comparing this and a car that gets 40 mpg, you save less, or comparing this and a car that gets 25 mpg, you save more.

May or may not actually save you money.

Stuff like this is great, but the real solution is to drive less.

In the mid 80's Ford put Cummings diesels in both their Tempo's and Escorts. My brother owned a Tempo diesel, he got well over 40 mpg all the time, and on one trip to FLA we got almost 50mpg. The problem was that GM put a diesel in several of their cars about the same time, and every one that had one hated it. Iirc, the GM diesel was not a true diesel but a conversion of a gas engine. That left a sour taste for many, and none of the big 3 have gone back to revisit this since then.

There's nothing wrong with driving an Accord. It's one of the best selling cars of all time.

My brother has a turbo diesel Cummings in his full size Ram, loves it. For what it is (a huge, heavy truck) it gets great mileage (which isnt great compared to econimic cars by any stretch). He has since sacrificed the mileage for horsepower upgrades.

Obama, Clinton, Bush, how much longer until this get sent to Wells?

Let's send Kevorkian to the Honda Dealership this traitor works at and end the stupidity once and for all. Or he could just get a job at the Honda deathcamp in Ohio (by far the most dangerous assembly line in America) and just like so many other saps that work there, he will soon end up dead.

So is the Taurus. Yet people still put that down too.

Not true.

GM right now has a tremendous amount of R&D in Diesel technology --- look for a large amount of vehicles in the future to be turbocharged or twin turbo diesels.

Maybe you should go ask your boyfriend to explain it to you.
Just kidding. I am not serious.

Not a very nice looking or riding car, but gets good mpg.

The article doesn't say how much the diesel version will cost. If it is significantly more expensive, then the cost/savings benefits will be minimized greatly.

Can someone point me to some stats that say GM actually was doing some R&D on alternative fuel cars/trucks during the 90's?? I'm trying to make that point in an argument here in our office.

I say they were, but am completely backing it up with no statistics whatsoever. Her argument is that while GM was making 15 mpg trucks, "everyone" else was developing alternative fuel cars. Therefore, Toyota, Honda, and "everyone but GM" saw this fuel crisis coming.

Please help. thanks.

This is the point I keep trying to make, but no one is listening to. When demand for these green cars goes up, guess which vehicle is going to be the new money maker for these car companies? They have to replace the 5K per vehicle they made on the trucks somewhere.

Meanwhile, my gas guzzling hog (which cost me 5K less than it should have because someone had to dump it quick), is looking like a bargain. I figured that I can drive it 100K miles before it starts "costing" me in gas.

FWIW, I heard on ABC News last night that Americans drove 4.5 Billion (yes, with a B) fewer miles in April 2008 compared to April 2007, so people are taking notice.
