Handguns should be banned
Just read about the MSU alum who was killed by some grumpy old man for no reason. The article had a link to another article about a jewelry store owner and customer who were killed in Grand Haven. This **** happens ALL the time.
Allow rifle ownership for the hunters and people who want to protect their families/homes - fine. But ban the damn handguns already. And you can save your responses about how only criminals would have guns, the Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, why don't we ban knives/rocks/automobiles, my family has had guns for years, you just need to respect them, blah, blah, blah.
No, banning handguns would not stop whackos from committing atrocities. However, untold meaningless crimes/suicides/accidents would be averted. Those of you who disagree can suck it.

You seriously don't understand the difference between getting skin cancer because you chose to go out in the sun or having a heart attack because you ate too much red meat and shooting someone else in the face with a gun?

There's always the constitutional convention route. Heck, if there was serious talk to put one in there to allow Arnold to run, California would probably go for this as well.

You seriously dont understand the difference between the actions of human and an object? It is the human that commits the crime not the gun.
That human purposely killed someone. If we ban cars, we can do away with accidents that kill people. Yeah, the car didnt mean to kill anyone, and the driver did not set out to kill anyone, but if we ban the car then the accident would never happen

Would still require 3/4 of the state legislatures to ratify any Amendment coming out of a convention, and that will NEVER happen.

I remember this story about a jeweler who armed himself and had instance after instance of hoodlums trying to rob his store then him shooting and killing them.
The hoodlums also had guns.
I think the only people that want to get rid of handguns are the people that never see the reason you would need one. It's great OJ, yer prolly a student in some rich area or middle class area. You prolly never will need a gun. But that's exactly why your opinion should be ignored.

I don't deny that sometimes people save their own or other's lives by using handguns. Good for them. But how often do you hear stories like that? Once in a while. How often do you hear about someone being robbed, raped, or murdered by someone with a handgun, or a kid finding his dad's handgun and killing himself or a friend, or some innocent person getting killed with a handgun in a road rage incident or carjacking or drive-by shooting? Every day. The "good" handgun stories are far outnumbered by the "bad" ones. I really like the ones where a five-year old brings a Glock to his kindergarten class. Those are the best.

Wow. Where's the straw man smilie when you need one...
Well, horses and letters aren't in the Constitution, and it took a Constitutional Amendment to get rid of slaves.
Handguns, falling under the general category of suitable arms which would not be for strict military issue, are regulated by the Second Amendment, which would require another Constitutional Amendment to alter. The likelihood of such an Amendment passing either House of Congress, or a Constitutional convention, and getting ratified by 3/4 of the states is ZERO.

Because media with an agenda doesn't consider it newsworthy. Just as any good news out of Iraq, or from New Orleans during and after Katrina, was overridden by the bad.

I encourage you to go to Iraq and report the "good" news stories that we are missing out on. You can be just like the people that go to Palestine to see and report from the Palestinian perspective.
You might find that the bad news actually does outweigh the good news, but I haven't been there...

I am just going to throw this out there but, isn't it kind of a non-event when no one dies. Not that guns and cars are the same, but when was the last time you heard about a 50 car NON-pile up in icy conditions? I would even venture to say a significant portion of that type of encounter aren't even reported to the authorities.
Anyone know if there is any evidence of this?

I'll be the first to say I really dislike guns. I've fired them at a range a couple times, I'm no marksman by any stretch of the imagination. It's just not my thing. Going with my usual skepticism, though, I'd be reluctant to hand everything off to the police and military and say "play nice," not because of any specific distrust towards them but the simple notion that if you give someone all the cards in the deck they're probably going to try using them, given enough time. I'm okay with Joe American owning a gun.
But he damn well better know when and how he should use, store, and respect it.
If you want to have the powers of life and death (mostly death), fine. But I want the government to register the hell out of you and make sure you know exactly what you're doing with it. I want them to be able to trace every gun to their owner. Heck, while I'm at it, make it public knowledge who has what gun. Finally, if you screw up, or if you let it fall into the wrong hands and some kid blows off their friend's face or what have you, it's your ass.
At least, that's how I feel about it.

Would I limit the type of guns people who have.... absolutely! (i don't see the reason why any person needs an automatic or semi automatic weapon)
would it pass into law..... not a hope
Would I limit the number of guns any person could have.... absolutely! (why does anyone need more than 2... one for protection, one for hunting)
would it pass into law..... not a hope
would I personally ban guns..... absolutely... have a bullet shave an eyebrow when you are caught in the middle of a gun battle will do wonders for changing a persons position....
would it pass into law.... not a hope
I wished they would...... it would never happen... and more innocent people will get killed in crossfire... or in accidents.... or just because some bloke going loco....
sad but true... sometimes you do wonder if people value the right to bear arms over human life.... yes it is emotive, but i do think that!!
