tOfficial McCain Houses Thread
Now here's something that the Dems can hit McCain with and get some traction - a good opening shot by Kaine.
McCain unsure how many houses he owns - Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen - Politico.com
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said in an interview Wednesday that he was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.
"I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."
The correct answer is at least four, located in Arizona, California and Virginia, according to his staff. Newsweek estimated this summer that the couple owns at least seven properties.
Political Radar: Kaine on McCain's House Gaffe: "He Couldn't Count High Enough"
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine mocked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday for not knowing exactly how many houses he owns.
"I understand that Sen. McCain was asked yesterday this question, 'how many houses do you own?,' and he couldn't answer that question. He couldn’t count high enough apparently to even know how many houses he owns," said Kaine.

In Nebraska you typically don't ask people how much land they have or how many cows. It is considered rude because it is basically asking them how much money do you have... My father-in-law usually says... "enough land for the cows... or enough cows for the land".
If you are very wealthy it would seem conceivable that you wouldn't want to seem bragging... easier to try to pass off the question. next.

In related news, Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen are also unsure of the exact number.

If this is what the Dems think is traction they have officially lost it.

It's the same as the best answer to the "How much do you make?" question: "Enough." Considering how most politicians are successful in their own right, accusing one another of being wealthy might not be the wisest move. Now, you might want to attack how McCain got that money, and try to paint him as elitest (don't you love how often that label gets thrown around): "Senator McCain says the economy is fine. And if we could all marry multimillionaires I might agree." But saying "Oh my gosh, he has a lot of stuff!" when you yourself have a lot of stuff seems ill-advised.

It might play in hard hit areas like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. It would work in tandem with some of the ads he's already running in those states about how McCain views the economy. They're already trying to portray McCain as out of touch on the midwest economy. This could fuel it.

Plus McCain's answer at Saddleback of how much money should you have to be considered rich and he answered "$5 million". That amount of money is completely out of reach for a lot of people struggling in this economy and I would think a lot of those people would consider a lot less wealth as being "rich".
And of course if McCain is worth $100 million, what does that make him? "Ultra rich" based on his own criteria? "Disgustingly wealthy?" "Obscenely loaded?"

The $5 million was a joke and McCain correctly predicted that it would be used out of context. Now the house thing....they might have something there.
WARREN: Everybody talks about, you know, taxing the rich, but not the poor, the middle class. At what point, give me a number, give me a specific number. Where do you move from middle class to rich? […]
MCCAIN: How about $5 million? No, but seriously, I don’t think you can, I don’t think seriously that the point is I’m trying to make, seriously, and I’m sure that comment will be distorted but the point is…that we want to keep people’s taxes low, and increase revenues. … So, it doesn’t matter really what my definition of rich is because I don’t want to raise anybody’s taxes. I really don’t.

Ask Obama how much coke did you do? And how many packs a day did you smoke? Until your handlers told you to quit?

Meh, it's a generic negative ad. No real one liners the pundits can use, overall I don't think it will make much of a difference.

here's the thing:
it's just another example of how out of touch McCain (the former POW in Vietnam) is with America and Americans...
unfortunately, the media will always give him a pass - the sheer nature of the corporate media is to foster a culture of ignorance - they need a dumber America to survive...
so.. I can have hope and faith, but I don't see America getting past Wal-Mart, NASCAR, American flags and processed meats..
and the media is certainly not going to do anything to encourage any degree of enlightenment - they need viewers.

This is a spectacular screw up from McCain. It puts the republicans on their heels a bit right before the democrats go into their convention and unroll their VP selection. The democrats can use it to blunt the impact one of the big republican talking points about Obama during convention week.

So, the McCain's have a bunch of property and pay someone to manage their assests. What is the big deal? Maybe he really doesn't know the exact number because they are buying and selling property a lot? Maybe he owns an apartment complex or something and doesn't know how many units are in there.
This really isn't going to turn into anything but class warfare.

So John Edwards has a bunch of money and chooses to spend it on $400 haircuts. What's the big deal?

Why is it class warfare? It's just straight up politics. The republicans do this exact same stuff to the democrats all the time.

It's sad, but despite what people say, negative ads work incredibly well. I was hoping it wouldn't come to it, but I think Obama's realizing he just can't win without fighting fire with fire.

It's not, he can spend his money like he wants to spend his money.
