Time: It's Mitt!
McCain likely to select Romney as VP choice.
I literally loathe Romney, he oozes sleezy used car salesmen.

If true, hasn't McCain just handed Obama his playbook? I mean, it seems like carte blanche to use anything and everything McCain said about Romney in the primary. If McCain tries to fight back, Obama then goes "Oh, so when you said the exact same thing earlier this year you were lying?" Then there's the "zomg he's a Mormon!" aspect. It'll help lock up Nevada, I think, but it could cost him in other places.

Nope. VP Candidates tend to ape the top dogs views - see Kerry/Edwards or Reagan/Bush. The other campaigns try to make it an issue, but people generally don't care - they see the two candidates "coming together". Hell, if Obama picks Biden I'm sure that the McCain folk already have the Biden clips from last winter ready to go, but it won't matter.

A rectal exam, Jack? Or are you implying he wants a rough game of hide the sausage? I'm sorry Jack, ever since that last thread I keep wondering. You sound really cute, you know?

I'm glad to see that my prayer was answered, and yes, I am pretty tall. But I'm still heterosexual. You'll have to settle for beating off to "The Passion of the Christ".

If its Romney, Mitt is the safe choice for the Bush2 people running the McCain campaign. Romney is also a native son of MI, Utah and MA depending on where he is when you ask him. I don't know how the addition of Romney will offset the number of new voters Obama has registered in MI.

Romney helps McCain quite a bit, and hurts him very little. The dittoheads and Hannitized love Romney. I think they like his economic stuff. Both he and McCain have changed positions quit a bit though so that would be a clear line of attack.
More than that, I think that McCain thinks that Romney helps him in Michigan. Whether or not that is true I kind of doubt, but it's worth a shot.

Someone please explain to me what this brings the ticket.
I'm sorry, but Michigan is NOT in play. It hasn't been for decades. On top of that, 90% of the population doesn't even know that Romney has Michigan ties.
So what's the benefit of picking him? You scare off Christian wackos in the South and you gain what.....bolstering up Utah???

A Romney pick is good for Colorado and Nevada. Michigan has been very competitive in 2000 and 2004. The last time Michigan went Republican was 1988.

The VP is rarely a negative. It might not be a positive in the south.

Of course.
VP choices make very little difference to a presidential candidate's chances of winning - at least in the modern era. The south is already heavily in the solid red category, if anything he's good at verbal attacks, which would help McCain win.

Romney is certainly an interesting pick. As a supporter of his, I'll do my best to not be too biased here. It's certainly arguable that McCain loses some independent and Democratic support with Romney on the ticket. No one can be certain of how much of an impact will be made there, but of course there will be an impact. Also, many conservatives have their doubts about Romney due to his religion and flip-flops.
However, I think a vast amount of the Republican base took too long to realize Romney was the one who shared their beliefs, positions, and values. Whether he reversed positions or not (and let's face it, if you're at the point in your career when you're running for President, you've switched positions on a few issues), he's on the right side now. For any Republican questioning Romney's values, I'd simply have them read 2 speeches - his "Faith in America" speech and his drop-out speech at CPAC.
With Romney, the McCain ticket also gains expertise on the issue that Americans are most concerned with right now: the economy. Romney has more experience in the real business world than anyone else who has a shot at being on either ticket, and that will resonate with many voters, particularly in industrial states. Romney could help McCain carry Pennsylvania.
Furthermore, Romney has the presidential aura. Very strong speaker, confident, and professional.
In regards to Michigan, I wouldn't be so quick to rule it out of play at this point. An extremely unpopular governor will certainly have an effect here, the only question is will it be enough.
Romney brings a lot to the table, but just like any other candidate, he brings risks. At this stage of the game, you have to believe that both campaigns have thought out every single scenario with every possible running mate. Neither camp will make a choice that brings more risk than reward.
