McCain TV Ratings Beat Obama in Preliminary Numbers
Presidential candidate John McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew more television viewers than his rival Barack Obama attracted at the Democratic party's event last week, according to preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research.
Across all broadcast networks Thursday, Sen. McCain’s speech ended the night with a 4.8 rating/7 share, compared to Sen. Obama’s 4.3/7 average, according to overnight numbers from metered households in 55 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen. These ratings are preliminary, however, and are subject to change.
NBC’s coverage of Sen. McCain’s speech started directly at the tail end of the opening game of NFL season, with the speech pulling in a 6.3 rating/10 share, topping Sen. Obama’s speech last week by 26%. That lead-in may have boosted audiences who last night turned out in droves to watch Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin introduce herself to the country.
ABC’s showing of the McCain speech averaged a 4.5/7, down 2% from the same night of the Democratic convention last week, while CBS’ coverage took in a 3.4/5, an increase of 3%.

Is that a good thing for him that more people saw his speech? Actually, I thought he started off great, then about a 1/3 of the way through began to sound like a nervous 7th grader giving an oral book report. Hopefully, most of those people tuned out by then.

How embarrassing for conservatives that so many people had to watch that train wreck of a speech. This is going to be very damaging.

tenths of a TV rating point or $10 million in donations vs $1 million.
If I'm running a campaign I want the latter.

FNC Wins With Top Rated Convention Broadcast in Cable History
Fox News Channel's 10pm ET hour last night became the top-rated convention broadcast ever on Fox News, and in cable news history.
Featuring Gov. Sarah Palin as the keynote, all networks performed well. But nearly one-quarter of all those who watched the speech last night watched it on Fox News.
FNC eclipsed the broadcast networks and cable competitors, amassing 9,200,000 Total Viewers in the 10-11:15pmET spot. Second place was NBC, with an average of 7,700,000. Third was CNN with 6,200,000, followed by ABC with 5,900,000, CBS with 4,600,000 and MSNBC with 3,400,000.

it's because the educated democrats want to be informed and be provided confirmation as to why exactly they will not be voting republican.

Think about this...
Were you more apt to be on vacation last week or this week?
School is back in session this week.
Who follows politics when you are on vacation?

And is anyone surprised Faux News was #1?

BTW, MSNBC was #1 last week.
I'd bet a lot of Dems were watching as well. I know I was...and I certainly won't vote for the right ever again.

What makes the right so ignorant and simple-minded is that they ONLY watch Fox News. Many don't watch CNN or MSNBC and most don't bother to find info on web. Fox allows them to stay in their own safe little bubble.

Amazing that you are not only able to speak for millions of people you've never met, you are able to speak to their viewing, surfing, and info gathering habits...

I am an Obama supporter.
I watched McCain's speech and not Obama's.
Why? Last night I was at home. Last thursday I was driving up north for a four day labor day weekend.
Pretty poor timing by the Dems. Who decides when the convention is? And why does it seem the Dems always go before the Reps?

talk about being ignorant
i guess i was watching: Fox News reporter Ron Allen get b-slapped by Newt on wednesday. Fox News reporter Talibandrea Mitchell get buried in balloons last night. Fox News analyst Rachael Maddow make an utter fool of herself night after night. Fox News reporter Anderson Cooper say "we now know more about MOOSES (not even a word) than ever before".

I would have thought Fox "News" would have done better. It looks like less that a quarter of the RNC viewers watched it on Fox.
About the big viewership of McCain's speech, I was hoping for that while I watched last night. The more people see of McCain, the better it is for Obama.

to quote Lee Corso: NOT so fast! From Sullivan:
The 40+ million figure includes PBS' estimate. Without PBS, Palin's speech was watched by 37.2 million. Obama's speech still had more viewers, over 42 million, when adding in PBS estimates.
