“The next step would be a particular state deciding to legalize marijuana entirely,” said Peter J. Cohen, a doctor and a lawyer who teaches public health law at Georgetown University. If federal prosecutors kept their distance even then, Dr. Cohen said, legalized marijuana would become a de facto reality.

Let's hope so. Once one state legalizes it will be only a short time for the rest to follow suit. After seeing that ending pot prohibition has not turned CA and/or MA into a zombie wasteland - and more importantly seeing the revenue brought in - other states will probably act quick to do the same.

Push to Legalize Marijuana Gains Ground in California

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/28/us....html?_r=1&hpw

Quote:
These are heady() times for advocates of legalized marijuana in California — and only in small part because of the newly relaxed approach of the federal government toward medical marijuana.

Drugs chief: Alcohol more dangerous than ecstasy, LSD and cannabis

Drugs chief: Alcohol more dangerous than ecstasy, LSD and cannabis - Health, News - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Quote:
All drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, should be ranked by a "harm" index, he said, with alcohol coming fifth behind cocaine, heroin, barbiturates, and methadone.

Tobacco should rank ninth, ahead of cannabis, LSD and ecstasy.

Prof Nutt said: "No one is suggesting that drugs are not harmful. The critical question is one of scale and degree. We need a full and open discussion of the evidence and a mature debate about what the drug laws are for - and whether they are doing their job."

Colo. ski town could push marijuana legalization

The Associated Press: Colo. ski town could push marijuana legalization

Quote:
"We don't want to spend our tax dollars prosecuting this, so we're saying, let's just stop it," said Sean McAllister, a Breckenridge attorney who proposed the ordinance. Supporters include a member of the town council and the Summit Daily News, which printed an editorial backing the idea.

I fully support that, but does it really change much in terms of immediate impact if it is still against state and federal laws?

Someone should tell Lincecum that speeding, with pot in the car, is not a good idea.

Lies About Marijuana Drive People to a Much More Harmful Drug -- Booze

Lies About Marijuana Drive People to a Much More Harmful Drug -- Booze | DrugReporter | AlterNet

Quote:
Of course, ignoring fact- and evidence-based advice about marijuana is just one part of the game our government has played over the past four decades. It has also gone out of its way to promote and spread myths about the drug – from the “gateway” theory to marijuana’s supposed connection to cancer to the notion that “potent pot” is somehow more dangerous than “your father’s marijuana.” Each one has been debunked or proven wrong or misleading, but there is no doubt that they have helped keep marijuana illegal.
Quote:
Perhaps most disturbingly, as almost anyone who has been exposed to the two substances could tell you, alcohol is far more likely to produce dangerous and socially destructive behavior. It is cited as a contributing factor in 25-30 percent of violent crimes in this country and in about 100,000 sexual assaults on college campuses annually. These kinds of negative associations simply don’t exist with marijuana.

Just doing my small part to try and educate people on the absurdity of current drug policy.

Johann Hari: Accept the facts – and end this futile 'war on drugs'

Johann Hari: Accept the facts – and end this futile 'war on drugs' - Johann Hari, Commentators - The Independent

Quote:
The proponents of the "war on drugs" are well-intentioned people who believe they are saving people from the nightmare of drug addiction and making the world safer.
Quote:
Fact One: The drug war hands one of our biggest industries to armed criminal gangs, who unleash terrible violence across the country.

Fact Two: Under prohibition, drug use becomes more hardcore.

Fact Three: The drug war doesn't reduce drug use – but the alternatives can.

AMA Ends 72-Year Policy, Says Marijuana has Medical Benefits

Opposing Views: OPINION:AMA Ends 72-Year Policy, Says Marijuana has Medical Benefits

Quote:
The American Medical Association (AMA) voted today to reverse its long-held position that marijuana be retained as a Schedule I substance with no medical value. The AMA adopted a report drafted by the AMA Council on Science and Public Health (CSAPH) entitled, "Use of Cannabis for Medicinal Purposes," which affirmed the therapeutic benefits of marijuana and called for further research. The CSAPH report concluded that, "short term controlled trials indicate that smoked cannabis reduces neuropathic pain, improves appetite and caloric intake especially in patients with reduced muscle mass, and may relieve spasticity and pain in patients with multiple sclerosis." Furthermore, the report urges that "the Schedule I status of marijuana be reviewed with the goal of facilitating clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines, and alternate delivery methods."

Is it just me or does this seems like a huge step?

The AMA, in my opinion, had been shackled by other Gov. Agencies to accept its previous stance. The AMA, either having the guts to go against its opressor or given the green light by its opressor to change its stance, appears to open a door to more tollerance and the posibility of legislation to regulate.

To me, this feels like a game changing momentum swing.
