I never argued that it was not vital for human life. What I have PROVEN is that CO2 can be toxic, which many of the righty morons on this board denied.
I proved my point. And did it without distorting any facts.

Once again, you have to place the question in the proper context. CO2 is not toxic in normal environmental circumstances. If you ask a person if CO2 is toxic they will say no because it is generally accepted that it is not toxic under normal conditions. But then you say HA! I got you! You're Dumb! If you breathe in a 50% mixture of CO2 you will go unconscious! And then the person says No ****, it's generally accepted that pigs can't fly but if I throw some wings on one they can, therefore pigs can in fact fly.

Great, now you are resorting to "flying pigs".
Sorry, bud, but pigs don't fly, even if you attach wings to them.
But people do, and have, died from CO2 POISONING.

Well i see '73 got banned.
The unfortunate thing is he uses the word "toxic" with absolutely NO idea how it's used. So I'll give him the definition that's basically used world wide. A substance's toxicity is determined by either an LD 50 or an LC 50. For a gas it's LC 50 (inhalation concentration measured in ppm). What this means is how much of an exposure it will take to kill 50% of a rat population within 14 days. This test is done by continuous inhalation for 1 hour.
The higher the LC 50, the less toxic it is. Gases that typically have an LC 50 above 400ppm are considered "non-toxic" for conventional purposes.
Now '73, you changed the rules of the game simply because you ran into people who have a fairly good understanding basic chemistry. When Redwing said "benign" he is correct. Resorting to the extreme case of being trapped in a room with ridiculously high amounts of CO2 to prove your point is just stupid. It'd be just as stupid as me saying water is toxic with you saying water isn't harmful at all to drink, and I counter that if you drink more than X amount in too short of time, you'll die of water poisoning. You'd get pissed that I change the rules.

A build up of Carbon Dioxide in the blood will cause the lowering of blood pH. CO2 combines with H2O to create H2CO3, carbonic acid, this is the culprit. Respiratory Acidosis sets in when the blood pH dips below 7.35. The build up of CO2 in the blood is usually due to hypoventilation (slow breathing). You're autonomic nervous system controls your respiratory rate, the bodie's natural defense against low blood pH is to increase respiratory to allow CO2 to be removed through normal alveolar ventilation. Your body also balances out the pH using bicarbonate (a base). Over compensation (too much bicarbonate) can cause respiratory Alkalosis. Respiratory Alkalosis can also be causes by hyperventilation, in which the levels of CO2 are lowered in the blood, raising the pH of the blood above 7.45. It's all about balancing pH, CO2 is a regulator in this. Usually this is only an issue for those who have chronic lung diseases/damage or CNS diseases/damage. Have no idea what the issue in this thread is. Not like we're going to walk outside and drop dead from breathing in CO2, it's a natural by product of respiration. Can it be toxic? Yeah, if the concentrations in the air get too high, a concern in areas with poor ventilation such as confined spaces, or a mine (as mentioned), or a lunar space craft. Some of you such as '73 may be piloting looney space crafts in your head, but I'm not too sure we really need to worry about too much about CO2 toxicity on space craft. I think NASA has figured the balance out. Too much oxygen (apollo 1) is not good either. Anyways, CO2 "poisoning" is not really a big concern walking down the street.
So basically, '73 was pretty much a douche when called out the other poster for mentioning that CO2 is a part of normal part of respiration, because it is. I suppose next he's going to argue that O2 is toxic to and we need to be worried. Too much oxygen can kill too. Ever heard of oxygen induced hypoventilation? Sneak into a hospital, pop on a nasal canula, and suck in 100% O2 for a few hours, see what happens. OMG, between all the O2 and CO2 in the air, we're all DOOMED

Righties should start placing bumper stickers that say "I heart pollution" on the back of their suvs.
