Coach D, please leave the religion at home.

I now this will bug some of you...and I totally support Dantonio and his efforts on the field, but does this next quote even need to be said in public? Does it even make sense? I say "no" and "no". I prefer to keep spiritual beliefs to myself. Anyone else think this is going too far?

""When you look at that number seven, for the people here that are spiritual in that sense, understand the Bible, you look at the number seven, it means completion. When you look at our football season right now, we have an opportunity to win seven games. That's important for this program." - Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, on getting to the seventh win of the season"

Religion is an important part of his life and the program he runs. The team prays after games and the literature he distributes to the team in camp includes religious quotations.

Yes, you're going too far looking for something to be offended by so you can whine.

People who aren't religious can take power from religion.

You're a physco.

God didn't seem to be on his side vs. CMU and Iowa. Maybe he didn't pray hard enough.

I am a fairly religious person. I go to church when I'm with my parents but other than that I just have faith. When I meet non religious people, I don't say anything because I don't care. When you meet a religious person, don't get upset if they say some religious stuff, it makes life easier.

But, you are probably a classic RCMB'er so you'll get upset at almost anything.

I'm not anti-religious, but if a coach at a public university handed me religious materials, I'd ask him to never approach me with that stuff again. It's intrusive and disrespectful to my beliefs. I think it might also violate church/state. If it's not materials, but instead is just "inspirational" talk and metaphors - I'd probably look for somewhere else to play. (Yes, I know I wouldn't be missed.).

Really though, just like at work..keep the religion to yourself please.

It doesn't have anything to do with being anti religion. I'm not either, but I think sometimes it could make players who aren't religious a little uncomfortable.

As far as this specific quote goes, I think you're stretching when you start mixing religion and needing/wanting to get a 7th win and a better bowl game. MSU getting a 7th win doesn't likely have anything to do with religion, a plan, etc.

No, no. It doesn't matter, because Mark Dantonio is shoving his religion down everyones throats.

i think he's saying that in the bible the number 7 means completion. he should have referenced the number 7 from the kamasutra, which i believe is a rusty trombone.

I am not Judeo-Christian but what Dantonio said in this quote is extremely innocuous and getting upset about it makes no sense to me. I certainly am not offended.

Compared to slapping oneself or crying in a presser, I can live with the occasional religious reference. I seem to recall another reference that seems to be just a tad popular. Can't remember how it goes though. Something about pride & fall?

What if he was a scientologist referencing Dianetics?? I agree with the OP about leaving the religion at home.
