As a freshman two seasons ago, Saginaw’s Tommie McCune did not fully understand why his head coach would match him up against then teammate Draymond Green in practice. Green, now a Michigan State sophomore and a contributor last season to the Spartans NCAA championship game run, was the toughest possible competition for McCune.
Now ready to start his junior season, the 6-foot-7, 190-pound McCune has learned to appreciate what Saginaw coach Lou Dawkins wanted him to gain from countless hours banging under the boards against Green. That experience helped harden McCune, the No. 19 power forward in the class of 2011 according to ESPN Scouts Inc.
McCune has an offer from Providence but says the two others schools also recruiting him heavily right now are Michigan State and Xavier.
The junior star recently sat down with Spartan Tailgate to discuss what he aims to accomplish during his junior season and how the recruiting process has gone to this point.
