Brandan Kearney and his father, Derrick, were all smiles Tuesday after Brandan announced his decision to play for Michigan State.
DETROIT – In the midst of Michigan State putting the finishing touches on its 2010 men’s basketball recruiting class, today the Spartans received their first 2011 pledge when Detroit Southeastern star Brandan Kearney committed to Michigan State minutes ago at a press conference at his high school.

A 6-foot-5 junior and the No. 24 shooting guard in the class according to ESPN Scouts Inc., Kearney chose the Spartans over Minnesota, Michigan, Georgetown and Ohio State.

“How can you say no to Coach Izzo, a top-five coach in the nation?” said Derrick Kearney, Brandan’s father said of the decision.

Said Southeastern coach George Ward: “The reason [Brandan] is committing today is so he can focus on winning a city and state championship and focus on team goals.”

Spartan Tailgate was there to take in the momentous day for the Detroit prep star. After making the announcement, Kearney sat down with Spartan Tailgate to give his reasons why he chose Michigan State.
