EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Facing the threat of a second loss to a MAC team this season, Michigan State improved to 5-5 after beating visiting Western Michigan, 49-14, on Saturday.
Running back Ashton Leggett’s career day was a big reason why. He rushed for 110 yards and four touchdowns and wasted little time making an impact.
Leggett helped Michigan State jump ahead to an early 7-0 lead with a 71-yard run, and the Spartans never looked back in building a 35-0 lead heading into halftime.
Western Michigan opened the third quarter with an 80-yard rushing touchdown, but MSU’s lead was too much to overcome. Leggett’s fourth score and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dion Sims made it 49-14.
The game marked the first 200-yard rushing effort of Michigan State’s season. Cousins was 22-for-25 passing for a career-high 353 yards and kicker Brett Swenson broke MSU’s all-time PAT record of 148.
Listen below as Leggett, quarterback Kirk Cousins and Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio address the media and reflect on the victory over Western while looking ahead to next week’s match-up against Purdue.
